GUIDE TO POST-SECONDARY EDUCATION IN CANADA Graduating from secondary school in 2004? The following resources have been compiled to help you make sense of what post-secondary programs are out there at both the university and college levels. Also included are selected financial aid and awards resources to help you pay for the increasing cost of financing a post-secondary education. Canadian Universities: The Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC) provides a list of all universities in Canada, complete with links to web sites for each institution. Also available on the site is a program locator to help you determine which school offers the program of your choice. SchoolFinder is another site which provides a searchable Canadian program database. Macleans has once again completed its annual ranking of Canadian universities. In addition to overall rankings, they offer ratings such as most innovative, leaders of tomorrow and highest quality. Canadian Colleges: The Association of Canadian Community Colleges (ACCC) site links to colleges from coast-to-coast, as well as providing other useful information on items such as internships. SchoolFinder also lets you search for college programs by using a keyword. Ontario: Those living in Ontario may want to visit the Ontario Universities Application Centre (OUAC) web site. The OUAC is a centralized application service for all Ontario universities and provides valuable information and links to Ontario universities. INFO is a 148 page guide for secondary school students planning on attending university and can be downloaded from the OUAC site in PDF format. Also included on the site is information about applying for various professional programs in Ontario such as Teaching, Medicine, Law and Rehabilition Medicine. Students planning on attending an Ontario Community College will find a program locator on the Ontario College Application Services web site. A list of colleges is also available as well as a guide on how to apply. Ontario applicants may also want to view the results of a recent survey conducted by the Association of Colleges of Applied Arts and Technology of Ontario which measured how satisfied college students are with their schools. British Columbia: The Post-Secondary Application Service of British Columbia (PASBC) allows secondary school students to apply online for 17 BC universities, colleges and institutions. Links to BC post-secondary institutions are available via a map or an alphabetical list. Alberta: The Alberta Learing Information Service provides post-secondary educational information via EDINFO. Other Canadian Post-Secondary Institutions: The National Association of Career Colleges provides a provincial breakdown of Career Colleges across Canada. In Ontario, the Ministry of Education and Training maintains a list of Registered Private Vocational Schools. Financial Aid: With the typical university student graduating with over $20,000 in debt, it pays to be aware of government financial assistance programs, private scholarship awards and their deadlines. Start your search for funding at the Canada Student Loans web site. Then check out the provincial financial assistance sites for more information: Newfoundland, PEI, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia and Yukon.
